No matter what your dream, you can pursue it through CTE.
You are entering a highly competitive workforce based on a global knowledge and information economy. To be career and college ready, you need to be able to integrate and apply 21st century skills, technical knowledge and skills, and core academic knowledge. With an emphasis on real world, real life skills, Career and Technical Education will help you be successful in the future. Our goal is that every student will graduate from high school globally competitive for work and post secondary education and prepared for life in the 21st century.

Why CTE?
The case is this: in order for students to succeed, we need to prepare them for the ever-changing world of work, which means not only college readiness, but career readiness - students with access to post secondary education and skills attainment possibilities that will prepare them to achieve in the 21st century.

We ask the question, "Why Career and Technical Education?" with honesty. Why, among the many competing education demands, student needs, and graduation requirements, does a program that has its foundations in the 1917 Smith-Hughes Act hold relevancy still? Between emphases on early learning to college preparation, where does Career and Technical Education (CTE) fit in and merit consideration? Why should students who barely have an opportunity to explore the arts, health and fitness, or social studies, be directed to courses in aerospace manufacturing, horticulture, financial math, sports medicine, or integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The answer to the above questions, we believe, is that CTE offers a unique opportunity to engage students in an enormous variety of subjects, incorporating academic, creative and technical skills, with the specific goal, nowhere else represented in education, of preparing students for all of life that comes after high school.

CTE needs to be an integral part of every student's education so that all students graduate from high school globally competitive for work, prepared for post secondary education, and ready for life as positive, contributing members of society in the 21st century. With CTE, students succeed.

Ms. Hatfield provides instructional leadership and guidance for Career and Technical Education programs at the high school, three middle schools, and the alternative high school within our district. Career and Technical Education Courses give students the opportunity to participate in hands-on training in programs and gain real world experience in their chosen pathway. Many programs offer the opportunities to earn nationally recognized certifications and earn college credits! Program ‘pathways’ include Business Information Technology, Marketing, Arts and Communication, Science and Natural Resources, Engineering and Technology (including NJROTC), and Health and Human Services. Ms Hatfield is focused on developing partnerships with local, regional and state business professionals and legislative leaders to expand and enhance opportunities for CTE students.

Ms. Hatfield is a South Kitsap graduate who returned to the district several years ago as an Agriculture Teacher before moving to the role of CTE Director. She received her Bachelor of Science and teaching credentials from Washington State University, a Master in Educational Leadership with Administrative and Principal Credentials from City University, and her CTE Director credentials through Central Washington University.

Heidi has been with South Kitsap School District for over ten years. She started out as a classroom volunteer when her three kids attended East Port Orchard Elementary School. She was then hired on as a district substitute (clerical/para-educator) and in 2012 she received a position working in the Teaching and Learning Department. Heidi was an Office Assistant within that department for eight years; she was responsible for maintaining assessment data/records for thousands of students in South Kitsap School District receiving support in programs such as Title I, Learning Assistance Program, English Language Learner, etc. She also provided support for our summer school and READY! For Kindergarten programs among just a few. Heidi has enjoyed learning about Career and Technical Education (CTE) and the opportunities SKSD has to offer our students.

Nichole joined the South Kitsap School District in March of 2021 as the High School’s front desk receptionist. She enjoyed the opportunity to provide a warm welcome to the community and help students and families find the resources they needed. Nichole moved to the CTE department as the Career Center Coordinator in September of 2022. She now assists students in navigating their post high school plans by organizing events for them to explore colleges, funding for education, military careers or work force options through presentations, fairs and field trips . She finds it incredibly rewarding to see students’ faces light up with excitement when they win the scholarship they’ve worked so hard on or receive a college acceptance or job offer. CTE is valuable to all students in helping them find their passion, giving them skills that make them valuable in today’s work environments, and providing a hands on learning experiences. Nichole is grateful to have joined this department and be part of the support that provides students confidence in their next steps in life.
