Backpacks for Kids
South Kitsap Backpacks for Kids has been serving South Kitsap families since 2007 by providing weekend food packs to students who need extra support outside of the school day. The program exists for families navigating difficult seasons and helps ensure children have access to food when school is not in session.
For parents facing financial pressure, an unexpected crisis, or other life challenges, knowing their children will have food throughout the weekend can provide a measure of relief during an already stressful time. Backpacks for Kids helps fill that gap with practical, shelf-stable foods selected with children in mind.
Each week, volunteers prepare and deliver food packs to local schools, where trusted school staff distribute them discreetly. Nearly 10,000 packs are provided each school year, demonstrating the power of a community coming together to support families with dignity, compassion, and care.

South Kitsap Backpacks for Kids works in partnership with schools throughout the South Kitsap School District to provide weekend food support for students who may need additional assistance. The program is funded entirely through community donations, grants, food drives, and volunteer support. Backpacks for Kids is a community-led program that works alongside South Kitsap School District staff to help ensure students have access to food throughout the weekend.
Each week during the school year, volunteers prepare and deliver between 350 and 500 food packs to participating schools. School staff then distribute the packs discreetly to students before the weekend. Packs contain shelf-stable foods that are easy for students to prepare and enjoy at home.
While many students receive a standard food pack, Backpacks for Kids also offers specialized options to meet a variety of needs, including allergy-friendly packs, no-cook packs, and packs designed to better reflect the cultural food preferences of participating families. The goal is to provide practical support that works for the unique circumstances of each household.
Families interested in learning more about the program can contact their child's teacher, school counselor, or school office. Participation is handled with care and confidentiality.
Community support makes this program possible. It costs approximately $6 to provide a single food pack, and nearly 10,000 packs are distributed each school year. Community members who would like to volunteer, organize a food drive, or make a donation can contact info@skbfk.com for more information.
